Kalari Shethra
During my stay in Kerala, I was privileged enough to visit Kalarishethra (Ground for Payattu). For those of you, who don't discern what Kalaripayattu is; it is one of the ancient form of martial arts which was originated in Kerala.

It is practiced as defense art but rather has an aggressive form as well where a warrior uses multiple weaponries against its adversary. The key of this martial art form, like any other is swiftness and dexterity together with the form. Kalari means Battleground or Arena and Payattu derived from payattuka which means to fight or to exercise or to put hard work into.

Origination
Some chronological references associate Chinese kung fu with Kalarippayattu, through the Pallava prince named Bodhidharman who voyaged to china and reached Shaolin temple. It is said that Kalaripayattu gained its present-day form around 6th century , during Chera and Chola dynasties.

Kalaripayattu is not just fighting technique but embraces a whole system of strikes, kicks, grappling, preset forms, weaponry and therapeutic methods.

For Tourists

There are many different Kalari Centers in Kerala, especially near Munnar and Thekkady. These centers have arena kind of structure where the opponent demonstrate different skills of Kalari in the arena. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Most of the shows are in the dusk at around 5:00 PM which customarily demonstrated for 1 Hour. These shows are performed by private establishments which are promoting the art and inspiring the young generation to be part of this culture.

Entry Tickets
You may have to purchase tickets ranging from 150 INR to 300 INR per individual but it absolutely worth it.

The Art
The demonstration starts with a prayer of God Shiva. It is said that God Shiva, Rishi Agastya, and Parashuram are the originator of this art.

With each fleeting moment, the demonstration gets more intense. These warriors have years of training and displays the immaculate style of Kalaripayattu. The presenter announces different styles and weapons, that would be used in the demonstration. The style may vary from one to three warriors or more and No weapons to a sword, spear, dagger and much more.

The last segment of the demonstration was to display expertise with fire. With sticks both side on fire, the warrior contest and dodge the opponents moves. Jump through the fiery ring or fight with it. With the whole arena in dark and fiery weapons in the hand of warriors was truly magnificent view. This showed their devotion to this martial art form which takes many years of discipline to master it.

To conclude, I would say that anyone visiting Kerala should take some time out from touring to visit these Kalari Arenas (Kalarishethra).
It would enrich you about the culture, tradition and rich heritage we have.
